The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s Immunisation courses are designed to provide the knowledge and skills required for pharmacists to deliver vaccination services to the community.

The Guild offers two immunisation course types: Full and Refresher. Please refer to the information below to explore both course options and determine the right course for you.

Full Course Information

Full Immunisation Course

The Pharmacy Guild Full Immunisation Course provides a background of immunisation in Australia, familiarises pharmacists with the resources that are available to support immunisation services, outlines the regulatory requirements which cover the provision of immunisation services within community pharmacy, and provides practical skill-based training in safe injection technique.

Course Fees

Cost includes workshop materials and catering (morning tea and lunch):

  • Guild member pharmacy: $525 (GST free) per person
  • Non-Guild member pharmacy: $640 (GST free) per person

Course Pre-Requisites

Pre-Requisites

Prior to attending the workshop, please ensure you have completed the below pre-requisites:

  1. Successful completion of the pharmacy-specific anaphylaxis training course with the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA). Available at: http://etrainingpharm.ascia.org.au.
  2. A current first aid (HLTAID011 Provide First Aid) & CPR certificate (HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
  3. Successful completion of online pre-learning modules. Your pre-learning modules will be available on your GuildEd account within 5 business days of enrolment and you will receive a notification via email once available. If you do not have a GuildEd account, create one here https://guilded.guild.org.au.

Submission of Pre-Requisite Items

Certificates confirming completion of pre-requisite items must be submitted prior to attendance at the face-to-face workshop. Participants will not be issued with a Statement of Completion for the vaccination course until the above-required documents have been received. Pharmacists cannot administer vaccinations until they receive the Statement of Completion for the course.

In exceptional circumstances, participants may apply for an extension for up to three months after the workshop to provide certificates for CPR and First Aid. This must be requested no later than two weeks prior to the workshop. Participants will be notified that knowledge of CPR and First Aid is required to successfully complete the practical assessment in the workshop.

If an extension is requested and the participant does not complete the workshop satisfactorily, the Guild takes no responsibility for lack of completion. The participant may choose to repeat the workshop at full cost.

If the participant is unable to complete the pre-learning prior to the workshop due to exceptional circumstances, Guild may choose to allow them to attend the workshop. However, knowledge of the material covered in the pre-learning is required to successfully complete the practical assessment in the workshop. if the participant does not complete the workshop satisfactorily, the Guild takes no responsibility for lack of completion. The participant may choose to repeat the workshop at full course cost.

  2. Vaccination Workshop: Face-to-face training where participants practice and are assessed on injection techniques.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the background to immunisation as a public health measure, including the body’s response to vaccination, and the role of immunisation in public health across a number of population groups
  • Recognise immunisation requirements across the age continuum, including the National Immunisation Program
  • Recognise the importance of recording immunisations
  • Recognise the risks associated with a number of vaccine preventable diseases on the NIP, including the vaccination requirements in the community and vaccine administration requirements (contraindications, storage and administration)
  • Identify the occupational requirements of pharmacists administering vaccines, including cold chain management, risk management, procedures and jurisdictional requirements
  • Recognise the appropriate procedures for preparing and administering vaccines for children and adults, including consent, positioning, identifying injection sites, appropriate pre-screening and recording of vaccinations
  • Recognise the appropriate procedures for preparing and administering vaccines for children, including positioning, identifying injection sites and development of catch-up schedules
  • Identify appropriate after-care following immunisation, including recognition of adverse events following immunisation and anaphylaxis response

CPD Credits

This activity has been accredited for 21 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 21 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 21 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 42 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.

Refresher Course Information

Refresher Immunisation Course

The Pharmacy Guild Refresher Immunisation Course is a four-hour workshop, designed for pharmacists who are already authorised immunisers, and is intended to increase pharmacist confidence to deliver immunisation services.

Course Overview

The course is suitable for pharmacists looking to refresh their injection techniques (Sub-cutaneous and Intra-muscular).

This hands-on refresher workshop covers:

  • Benefits, precautions and target groups for vaccine administration
  • Vaccine reconstitution technique
  • Injection techniques (Sub-cutaneous and Intra-muscular)
  • Appropriate post-vaccination care in a pharmacy setting

Course Fees

Cost includes workshop materials:

  • Guild member pharmacy: $220 (GST free) per person
  • Non-Guild member pharmacy: $350 (GST free) per person

Course Pre-Requisites

Participants must hold a current Pharmacist Immuniser certificate. If you do not hold a current Pharmacist Immuniser certificate, please refer to the Pharmacy Guild Full Immunisation Course, which has been developed to provide the knowledge and skills required for pharmacists to deliver vaccination services to the community.

  • Discuss references which should be utilised in a pharmacist vaccination service
  • Demonstrate the vaccination pre-screening and consent process
  • Demonstrate hand hygiene procedure
  • Describe the benefits, precautions, and target groups for influenza, dTpa and MMR vaccination
  • Demonstrate the ability to set up a vaccination area with required injecting equipment
  • Demonstrate the ability to draw up from a syringe and administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections
  • Discuss appropriate post-vaccination care in a pharmacy setting
  • Describe the symptoms and management of vasovagal episodes and anaphylaxis

  • Full refresher course: This activity has been accredited for 5.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 5.5 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 5.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 11 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities
  • Online module: This activity has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 1.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 3 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
  • Workshop: This activity has been accredited for 4 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 4 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 4 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 8 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
