Suicide Prevention Education and Training

The Queensland Branch is pleased to partner with ConNetica to deliver two free, early suicide prevention training programs in 2021; Conversations for life®and Stronger Smarter Yarns for life®.

Funded by the Australian Government and the Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network (PHN), this training is open to both community pharmacy staff and members of the public. The integrated training sessions aim to promote community connections and social inclusion whilst reducing stigma related to mental illness.

Education and upskilling attendees in early suicide prevention will increase the confidence of pharmacy staff and community members to engage in conversations with people at risk for early intervention. The project also aims to promote and build on the relationships between local pharmacy staff and people who attend the pharmacy.

As such, pharmacies are encouraged to promote and attend the training with customers, and assist them in registering. Download the promotional flyer.

Community pharmacies are highly accessible and frequently visited health destinations, and staff are well placed for significant interactions with members of the public who may be at risk. Register below!

Conversations for life®

The Conversations for life® training will be a half-day workshop during the evening at the following locations. Please note that places are strictly limited so register now to avoid missing out.

About Conversations for life

Conversations for life® is an early suicide prevention training course by ConNetica that provides participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to have conversations with others who are starting to show signs of distress.

This community-led early suicide prevention initiative shifts the dial from costly suicide crisis intervention to early suicide prevention. Learners will leave the training more ready, willing and able to have early conversations with people who are not coping or becoming overwhelmed with the challenges they face.

Conversations for life® is the only very early suicide prevention program of its type in Australia. The training is delivered by Conversations for life® trainers who come from all walks of life to help maximise the relevance and credibility of the training for diverse audiences.

This training program provides participants with:

  • An awareness of the prevalence of mental health and suicide in Australia
  • An understanding of life events and social determinants that contribute to mental illness
  • The skills and knowledge to identify signs and debunk social myths regarding suicide
  • Tailored mental health conversation planning tools
  • Problem solving and communication strategies that focus on mental health and suicide prevention
  • A list of suitable referral, support options and resources at local and national levels
