Pharmacist Administration of Influenza Vaccine 

This course is intended to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to safely and competently provide immunisations to people within the community pharmacy environment.

Pharmacists completing this one-day course will obtain a certificate issued by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, accredited for CPD by Australian College of Pharmacy (22 Group 2 CPD points).

Course Dates

No further training dates are currently planned for 2017. Training is expected to recommence in early 2018 and will be subject to demand.

Course Objectives

  1. Summarise and discuss the theoretical and practical requirements of an immunisation service in community pharmacy
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the influenza virus, including virology, clinical features and epidemiology
  3. Discuss and compare available influenza vaccines in Australia, including dosage and routes of administration
  4. Identify patients who are eligible to receive the influenza vaccine under the National Immunisation Program Schedule and recognise the implications for a community pharmacy immunisation service
  5. Outline the clinical features of adverse events following immunisation and the appropriate management of these events:
    a)   Vasovagal episode
    b)   Anaphylaxis event
    c)   Minor/common adverse events
  6. Demonstrate the skills necessary to deliver vaccination

Course Prerequisites

Pharmacists wishing to complete the course “Pharmacist Administration of Influenza Vaccine” must show currency in the following courses prior to attending. Pharmacists must also be currently registered with AHPRA and submit a copy of their registration certificate prior to attending the course.

A certificate or statement of attainment will be issued by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, RTO Number 0452 upon successful completion of the course.

This activity has been accredited for 11 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 11 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 11 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 22 CPD credits) upon participation in required interactive workshop activities and successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
