Flu update – Reminder to get vaccinated

8 May 2024

Flu season is now upon us and pharmacists are again encouraging Australians to get vaccinated.

Anthony Tassone, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s Victorian Branch President says that getting an annual vaccine is the best defence against the flu.

“It protects you, your family, our community and those who are more vulnerable if they get sick."

“If you’re already getting another vaccine, such as COVID, it’s safe to get your flu vaccine at the same time,” Mr Tassone said.

He also took the opportunity to encourage pharmacists to continue to remind patients to get vaccinated at every opportunity.

“For our patients, we have an important role in making sure we’re one of those reminders. Sometimes all it takes is a simple question: have you had your flu vaccine yet?”

The Guild reached out to Members of the Australian Parliament to promote the role of vaccination in preventing disease and protecting vulnerable people.

Michelle Rowland MP thanked the team at Cincotta Discount Chemist in Blacktown for helping her get vaccinated this year.

“Getting vaccinated is an important part of protecting yourself and others from the flu, “Ms Rowland said.

Hon David Littleproud MP joined Hon Mark Coulton MP at Orana Mall Pharmacy where they spoke with pharmacy owner Lisa Gibson about recent changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

They took the opportunity to get their flu and COVID vaccines while they were there.

Farrer MP Sussan Ley also urged those in her electorate to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated after her recent visit to Priceline Pharmacy in Albury to receive hers.

“Getting the jab at your local chemist is becoming more and more convenient, with the difficulty some people have getting into see their regular GP. It is also quick and convenient,” she said.

Community pharmacists have administered over 10 million COVID-19 vaccines and in 2023 administered 2.2 million influenza vaccines.

These numbers are a testament to their important role in promoting and supporting the uptake of vaccinations.
