Rationing of RATs to ensure equitable access

5 January 2022

Statement by Professor Trent Twomey, National President, Pharmacy Guild of Australia:

We are working with the Commonwealth through the National Co-ordination Mechanism to implement a voluntary code which will place limits on Rapid Antigen Tests at point of sale.

This is similar to the voluntary practices which were put in place at the start of the pandemic in 2020 in consultation with the Therapeutic Goods Administration regarding rationing of salbutamol and paracetamol.

These voluntary mechanisms are put in place to prevent stockpiling and ensure as many people as possible have access to these tests.
