The following is a statement from Pharmacy Guild National President, Professor Trent Twomey

“The Pharmacy Guild of Australia welcomes today’s agreement among federal, state and territory leaders to make health reform a priority over the next 12 months.

“We agree with the Prime Minister and the Health Minister that the interests of patients must always be at the centre of any health care reform.

“The Pharmacy Guild looks forward to engaging with all levels of government as well as other health professionals in negotiating better outcomes for patients and their communities.

“We support the Health Minister when he said that at a time of workforce constraints, “it doesn’t make sense as a country not to have every health care professional work to the top of their scope of practice”.”

The Guild also welcomes the following comments:

“I also welcomed the advocacy from the Pharmacy Guild of Australia on expanding the scope of practice for pharmacy. Tasmania supports the expansion having recently announced a Review of pharmacists’ scope of practice in Tasmania.” - THE HON. JEREMY ROCKLIFF, Premier of Tasmania

“I think any way we can expand the scope of practice, whether it be pharmacists or nurse practitioners, to allow them to apply their trade in a clinically safe way, we should actively contemplate.” - THE HON. PETER MALINAUSKAS, Premier of South Australia

“I do think this is something that should be rolled out across the country. It’s not something that is new, but it is something that makes sense.” - THE HON. DOMINIC PERROTTET, Premier of New South Wales

"Some of this is not about money. It's about better connecting systems, better connecting services and making sure that we've got the right people with the best skills and we make the best use of those skills. For instance, expanding the scope of practice allowing community pharmacists to do more." - THE HON. DANIEL ANDREWS, Premier of Victoria
