12.8 million COVID-19 vaccinations and counting: Helping patients stay protected this winter

18 June 2025

This month marks the anniversary of Australia’s first COVID-19 vaccination in community pharmacy. Given at Foote’s Pharmacy in Boonah, QLD on 7 June 2021, it was the first of more than 12.8 million COVID-19 vaccinations to date. Fast forward four years and pharmacies are being called upon again to encourage vaccine uptake and help the fight against flu.

This year has already seen a record-breaking number of flu cases in Australia, alongside low vaccination rates across various age groups. One of the best ways pharmacists can help boost community health is by offering vaccine education and co-administration.

Many vaccines can be given together without issue, and giving patients the option to get multiple immunisations in a single visit combines convenience with peace of mind. It’s easy for pharmacists too: when checking patients’ immunisation histories before an appointment, take note of what other vaccinations they may be eligible for and if you’re able to offer them at the same appointment. Check out this short video, Guild member Caroline O’Keefe from Capital Chemist Kingston, ACT.

The Guild has developed a new poster for members to display in their consult rooms, to remind patients to ask about other vaccinations they may be eligible for.

Vaccine education is also a vital part of increasing awareness and uptake. Vaccines are safe and effective ways of reducing preventable disease and keeping everyone safe, and as one of Australia’s most trusted professions pharmacists are perfectly placed to help dispel myths and soothe concerns.

Even making patients aware of available concessions can make a difference. Many Australians may not be aware of their eligibility for free vaccines under NIPVIP, or that COVID-19 vaccinations are free for all patients, or that pharmacies even offer vaccinations. The Guild’s member resources can help pharmacies advertise their services and get more patients taking the jab to keep themselves and their communities safe.

As winter – and peak flu season – sets in, stay vigilant about your community’s health and share your vaccination services as widely as you can.
