Community Pharmacists across the state can deliver advice and treatment for a range of conditions. Urinary tract infections are the second highest preventable hospital presentation, and can be safely and effectively treated at a community pharmacy, avoiding the need for a visit to the ED.
NSW Branch President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Mario Barone, said many patients may not realise the breadth of healthcare services available at their local community pharmacy.
“Community pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can help with a growing range of everyday health concerns," Mr Barone said.
"Whether it's a urinary tract infection, advice on managing flu symptoms, vaccinations, or identifying conditions that may become more serious if left untreated, such as shingles, your local pharmacist can often provide care quickly and conveniently."
"The health system is under pressure, and it needs every single professional to step up and deliver care to the full extent of their training, skills and experience. Working together we can deliver the best outcomes for our patients and reduce pressure on the health system.”
Within the coming months there will be an additional 250 community pharmacists with advanced training from the University of Newcastle and UTS able to diagnose, treat and prescribe for a range of everyday conditions. This will further relieve pressure on GPs and EDs, ensuring patients can get more healthcare from their local pharmacy.
Mr Barone also urged those in New South Wales to get vaccinated.
"The winter flu season is putting considerable pressure on the health system. Flu and RSV cases continue to increase which is incredibly worrying for vulnerable communities.
“It’s not too late to protect yourself and your family – community pharmacies can offer vaccinations without an appointment. It’s quick, convenient and can help keep you safe,” he said.
