Pharmacy Guild of Australia Queensland Branch President, Chris Owen, encouraged anyone who hasn’t yet taken advantage of the free flu vaccine program to act quickly before time runs out.
“We’re still seeing an increase in the number of flu cases across the state,” said Mr Owen, “last week Queensland had more than 200 patients admitted to hospital because of the flu and recorded over 3200 new cases.”
“So far this year there have been more than 31000 flu cases,” said Mr Owen.
Mr Owen also said that community pharmacies had played an important role in helping Queenslanders protect themselves against influenza.
“Community pharmacies across Queensland have made it easier for people to get their flu vaccination close to home or work,” Mr Owen said.
“Our pharmacists have been proud to support this program and help protect their local communities.”
Mr Owen said the approaching deadline was a reminder for anyone who had not yet received their 2026 flu vaccination to act.
“If you’ve been putting it off, there’s still time. The free program ends next Wednesday, so make your booking now,” he said.
Mr Owen said the school holidays provided families with a chance to organise their vaccinations.
“Whether you’re heading away, catching up with grandparents or spending time with friends, flu is the last thing you want disrupting your plans,” he said. “Vaccination can help reduce your risk of serious illness. Speak with your local community pharmacist and get it sorted before the program ends.”
The Queensland Government’s Free Flu Vaccination Program is available to Queenslanders aged six months and older until 30 September 2026.
