See your community pharmacist this National Stroke Week to lower your stroke risk

9 August 2025

‘Know the signs and you could save a life’ is the message of National Stroke Week 2025 and a timely reminder for Queenslanders to take control of their health by proactively consulting with their local community pharmacist.

Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. It is a leading cause of disability and death in Australia. Recognising the warning signs early and managing risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol can significantly reduce the chances of having a stroke or lessen its severity.

Chris Owen, Branch President of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, said that through the Queensland Community Pharmacy Chronic Conditions Management Pilot, community pharmacists deliver cardiovascular disease risk reduction programs including blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring, medication reviews, and other lifestyle advice. These services can help patients manage the risk factors that contribute to stroke and other serious health conditions.

“Your community pharmacist is trained and equipped to assess cardiovascular health and guide you on managing your risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol,” said Mr Owen. “You do not need an appointment. Simply walk into your local pharmacy and start the conversation.”

“From blood pressure and cholesterol checks to support for managing type 2 diabetes, asthma or COPD, your local community pharmacy is ready to help you take charge of your healthcare. They can also support you to quit smoking – one of the most preventable causes of stroke. These accessible services mean Queenslanders can act now to protect their health and lower their risk,” Mr Owen said.

“According to the ABS, almost one in two Australians (49.9%) now live with a long-term health condition. Community pharmacies provide an accessible, trusted, and timely healthcare option for many people, especially in regional and remote areas,” said Mr Owen.
