Free flu vaccination program now underway across Queensland

9 April 2026

Following the announcement by the Crisafulli Government in February, Queenslanders can now access free fluvaccinations as the Queensland Government’s Free Flu Vaccination Program gets underway for 2026.

Under the State Government Program, free flu vaccines are available for all Queenslanders aged six months and older through participating community pharmacies across the state from 1 March to 30 September 2026.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia Queensland Branch President, Chris Owen, said the launch of the program ensures Queenslanders can access free protection against influenza ahead of the peak flu season.

“Flu activity remained high across Queensland last year, with more than 95,000 confirmed influenza cases recorded in 2025 which was 21% higher than the previous year”, Mr Owen said. “More than 9,100 Queenslanders required hospital treatment due to influenza, showing how serious this illness can be.”

Mr Owen said vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce serious illness and limit pressure on hospitals during winter.

“When more Queenslanders get vaccinated, we see fewer severe flu cases and fewer hospitalisations. This helps ensure hospital beds remain available for patients with the most urgent needs,” he said.

“Vaccination protects not only individuals but also vulnerable members of the community, including young children, older Queenslanders and people living with chronic health conditions. It is also pleasing to see the State Government expand the Free Flu Program in 2026 by including a new needle-free, nasal-spray flu vaccine for children aged two to five years (inclusive), available through participating community pharmacies.”

The free program will run from 1 March to 30 September 2026.

Mr. Owen encouraged Queenslanders not to delay booking their vaccination, “it can take up to two weeks for the vaccine to reach maximum effectiveness, so getting vaccinated early is important,” he said.

“Community pharmacies are located in almost every town and suburb across Queensland, making it easy for people to access their free flu vaccination close to home,” Mr. Owen said.

Queenslanders are encouraged to Think Pharmacy First and book their free flu vaccination now.
