Under the Queensland Government’s Free Flu Vaccination Program, free flu vaccines are available for all Queenslanders aged six months and older through participating community pharmacies until 30 September 2026.
Pharmacy Guild of Australia Queensland Branch President, Chris Owen, said now was the time for Queenslanders to protect themselves and their families before flu season reaches its peak.
“Influenza can be a serious illness, particularly for young children, older Queenslanders and people living with chronic health conditions. Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of serious illness and help limit pressure on hospitals during winter,” Mr Owen said.
Community pharmacy continues to play a growing role in protecting Queenslanders, with more than 30, 000 additional vaccinations delivered through pharmacies this year compared to the same period last year.
Mr Owen also welcomed the expansion of the Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program, which is offered free in 2026 for children aged 2 to 5 years inclusive, and now to those aged 6 to 17 years inclusive who struggle with getting a needle.
“The nasal spray program is already delivering results, driving a 30 per cent increase in vaccinations for children aged 2 to 5. Queensland is leading the country with a 31.4% per cent increase in under-five vaccinations.”
“The expanded program eligibility will help make flu vaccination easier for many Queensland families. We’ve been having a lot of people come in and ask about this needle-free option for vaccination, so it’s great that the Queensland Government has made it available to more people.”
“For many families, fear of needles can make vaccination stressful. The nasal spray option helps remove that barrier for eligible children and gives parents another way to protect their children before flu season peaks.”
“Community pharmacies are pleased to be supporting the program and providing accessible flu vaccination options for families across Queensland,” Mr Owen said.
Community pharmacies are located in almost every town and suburb across Queensland, making it easier for people to access free flu vaccination close to home. Many pharmacies offer convenient appointment options and trusted health advice from pharmacists who are part of their local communities.
