Over one million Queenslanders protected - but flu cases still climbing fast

5 June 2025

More than one million Queenslanders have already received their influenza vaccine since the Queensland Free Flu Vaccination Program began in March. However, with hospital admissions on the rise and 37 flu-related deaths already recorded this year, Queenslanders are being encouraged not to become complacent.

Chris Owen, Branch President of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, said while it was encouraging to see strong early
uptake, and that now was not the time to ease off.

“This year’s flu numbers are up sharply from last year," said Mr Owen. “For Queenslanders to protect themselves and their loved ones against this year’s outbreak, now is the time to act.

“Influenza activity typically peaks during the winter months, and this year’s virus has already taken hold. In addition to the thousands of confirmed cases so far in 2025, hundreds of people have required hospitalisation due to serious illness.”

Mr Owen went on to say that "The message is simple. The earlier you get vaccinated, the better protection you’ll have. The vaccine takes around three weeks to reach maximum effectiveness, so don’t wait until you or someone close to you is seriously unwell."

All Queenslanders aged six months and over are eligible for the free flu vaccine at local community pharmacies across the state.

“We’ve seen a great response from people wanting to do the right thing for themselves and their families,” Mr Owen said. “Community Pharmacies are one of the most accessible healthcare providers in the state, particularly in rural and regional communities.”

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of influenza and prevent complications, especially among vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.

“Flu isn’t just a bad cold. It can cause serious illness, hospitalisation and, sadly, death. Protecting yourself also protects those around you who might be more vulnerable,” Mr Owen said. “We are encouraging all Queenslanders to act now and not delay booking their free flu vaccination.”
