Chris Owen, Branch President of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, said the week is an important opportunity to encourage older Queenslanders to take a more active role in managing their health.
“This week will see activities across the state, such as fitness classes, workshops, and social gatherings, that help participants maintain independence and enhance overall well-being,” said Mr Owen.
“Community pharmacists are well placed to help adults over 50 stay healthy and independent. They can provide advice on managing long-term conditions, offer vaccinations, review medications, and support healthy lifestyle choices like nutrition and exercise.”
"Almost one in two Australians now live with a long-term health condition, and many adults over 50 face multiple chronic issues. Community pharmacies provide accessible, trusted, and timely healthcare support, particularly in regional and remote areas, helping people stay active and maintain their well-being for longer,” Mr Owen said.
Some of the services community pharmacists provide that support healthy ageing include:
- Blood pressure and cholesterol checks
- Diabetes management and MedsCheck reviews
- Vaccinations, including flu, shingles, and travel health
- Smoking cessation advice
- Guidance on nutrition, physical activity, and weight management
- Support for asthma, COPD, and other chronic conditions
Mr Owen also said, “In addition to these services, community pharmacists can provide guidance on preventive health measures such as bone health, eye checks, and managing medications safely. We can also help adults over 50 recognise early signs of common age-related conditions and connect them with appropriate healthcare providers, ensuring they remain independent, active, and engaged in their communities.”
