Recall of Abbott infant formula products and advice on supply of substitute products

Date: 22 February 2022

Abbott Australasia Pty Ltd is conducting a precautionary recall of various powdered infant formula products including EleCare, Similac and Alimentum manufactured in the United States. The products are available nationally through prescription at pharmacies, hospitals and via direct mail order. Not all batches of the products are affected.

The recall is due to potential microbial contamination (Cronobacter and Salmonella). Food products contaminated with Cronobacter or Salmonella may cause illness if consumed.

What to do

Community pharmacists are asked to assist parents/carers to identify and source suitable alternative formula products.

  • Pharmacists are encouraged to review their records to identify any existing patients who have been dispensed the affected products
  • Contact the parent / caregiver and advise of the recall and determine if they have any stock of the affected batches
  • Where affected products / batches are identified, work with the parent /caregiver to obtain an alternative and liaise with the prescriber to obtain a new prescription (if required)
  • Advise parents/caregivers to return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund, once an alternative product has been sourced. Medical advice on alternative products can be sought from the treating doctor

Community pharmacies are advised to read the supplied information to assist patient and carers who may be impacted.
