The Pharmacy Guild of Australia (The Guild), Victoria Branch welcomes the Allan Government’s announcement to provide free mpox vaccines through community pharmacies across Victoria, in addition to four vaccination sites across the state.
President of the Guild’s Victoria Branch, George Tambassis praised the initiative that provides more accessible options for Victorians without the added cost of an appointment with a GP.
“This is a vital step in protecting Victorians. We saw a resurgence of mpox cases in 2024, and expanding access through pharmacies means faster, easier, and free protection delivered right in the heart of our communities.”
Community pharmacists are uniquely positioned to support public health efforts, offering trusted, convenient, and expert care on the frontline. By broadening access to vaccinations, the program strengthens the State’s response to mpox and reduces the pressure on GPs and hospitals.
Mpox is a viral infection that can cause fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, with some cases requiring hospitalisation. It spreads through prolonged physical or intimate contact and can be contagious up to four days before symptoms appear - highlighting the need for widespread and accessible vaccination.
The mpox vaccine (JYNNEOS®) provides the most protection against the disease with two doses administered 28 days apart.
“Pharmacists are ready to help keep our communities safe and we urge all Victorians to visit their local pharmacy and get vaccinated.”
The initiative will be available until 30 June and also includes four free vaccination sites to now operate in Northcote, Abbotsford, Carlton and Footscray.
