National Immunisation Strategy

The National Immunisation Strategy 2025-2030 (NIS) provides a roadmap to increase and sustain national immunisation rates over the next 5 years. It takes a “whole-of-system approach” to immunisation, with a vision of a “healthier Australia through immunisation.”

The Mission

To reduce the impact of vaccine-preventable diseases through high uptake of safe, effective and equitable immunisation across the lifespan.

The 6 areas of priority

  1. Improve access to immunisation
  2. Build trust, understanding and acceptance in communities
  3. Use data more effectively to target strategies and monitor performance
  4. Strengthen the immunisation workforce
  5. Harness new technologies
  6. Implement sustainable reform in program governance, delivery and accountability

What does this mean for your pharmacy?

In its goal to deliver services in new and tailored ways, the strategy seeks far more engagement with Community Pharmacy and may have important implications for the development of pharmacists’ role as immunisation providers.

The strategy seeks a whole-of-system approach to immunisation, including a stronger focus on improving equitable access, strengthening emergency preparedness, enhancing community engagement, and strengthening Australia’s current immunisation workforce.

Importantly for pharmacy, the strategy includes a focus on utilising innovative service delivery models, specifying the vital role of community pharmacists as immunisers under the National Covid-19 Vaccination Program, in conjunction with its goal to enable providers to work safely to their full scope of practice across all jurisdictions.
