Connecting Culture and Care in Community Pharmacy

27 November 2025

Kelly Tanner, Indigenous Engagement Manager, Pharmacy Guild of Australia

Gamilaraay pharmacist Kirra Natty is leading culturally safe change in community pharmacy.

Her Elders Cup of Tea and Yarn Up invites Aboriginal Elders to discuss health and medications through storytelling, yarning, and Aboriginal language—building trust and empowerment.

Kirra’s messages for Gunnedah mob, shared on Carter’s Pharmacy Gunnedah’s social pages, show how simple, culturally grounded actions—like local language, a poster, or a shared yarn—can improve access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

By embedding cultural safety and community voice, Kirra’s work supports Closing the Gap priorities—improving primary health care access, chronic disease management, and cultural wellbeing—and demonstrates how small, community-led initiatives can drive lasting change across Australia’s community pharmacy network.
