Guidance for pharmacies in Assessing and managing the risk of COVID exposure

Date: 26 November 2021

SA Health have released a new Testing Tracing Isolation and Quarantining (TTIQ) model, for Primary and Community Healthcare settings, including pharmacies, which outlines the testing and quarantine requirements for contacts of a COVID-19 case from 23 November following the re-opening of the SA Borders.

Pharmacies are urged to review the Risk assessment guidance for primary and community healthcare settings document as it contains important information to assist you to prepare for and to conduct your own risk assessment in the event of a COVID-19 exposure.

Based on the risk matrix contained within the guidance document and in order to minimise the risk to staff being exposed to or required to quarantine in the event of a contact to a Covid case, it is strongly recommended that pharmacies implement the following measures:

  • Revisit your Covid Management Plans and risk mitigation strategies and ensure they are appropriately documented and communicated to all staff.
  • Increase the level of PPE worn by staff as recommended in the guidance document.
  • Ensure all staff/clients are wearing appropriate masks at all times.
  • Ensure customers QR Code at entrances.
  • Maintain appropriate social distancing requirements.
  • Consider all staff to wear N95/P2 masks (which must be fit checked at a minimum) and eye protection.
  • Limit the time of contact with patients / clients to minimise the risk of exposure.
