Date: 27 February 2024
From 1st March 2024, South Australian women aged 18 to 65 years, experiencing symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI will be able to speak to trained community pharmacists for assessment and access to a one-off course of antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription, if they meet certain clinical criteria.
Community pharmacists who have completed additional training will be able to provide services to eligible patients for the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) in accordance with the conditions of the Community Pharmacy Urinary Tract Infection Services Scheme as determined by the Minister for Health and Wellbeing by notice in the Government Gazette on 2nd February 2024.
In the lead up to March 2024, pharmacists are encouraged to start preparing to provide SA Community Pharmacy UTI Services by undertaking the accredited training and familiarising themselves with the conditions of the Scheme.
Accredited training is available from the Australasian College of Pharmacy (ACP) complimentary to all pharmacists.
Further information including a UTI Management Protocol along with links to the relevant professional practice standards and evidence based clinical guidelines, are available on the SA Community Pharmacy Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Services | SA Health website.
Members can contact the Guild SA Branch Business Support team on 8304 8300 with any questions or guidance on implementing the UTI service.
