South Australian Expanded scope of practice member resources

Guild members will have exclusive access to a wide range of downloadable resources to support scope of practice training and service delivery.

Conditions that can be assessed, managed and treated by a Scope authorised pharmacist

Authorised community pharmacists who have completed an SA Health-approved postgraduate qualification can assess, manage, and treat a broader range of common conditions and provide health and wellbeing services for eligible people with:

Common conditions

  • Acute exacerbations of mild plaque psoriasis
  • Acute minor wound management
  • Acute nausea and vomiting associated with gastroenteritis
  • Acute otitis externa
  • Acute otitis media
  • Allergic and nonallergic rhinitis
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
  • Herpes zoster (shingles)
  • Impetigo
  • Mild acute musculoskeletal pain
  • Mild to moderate acne
  • Mild to moderate atopic dermatitis

Health and wellbeing services

  • Hormonal contraception (initiation)
  • Management for overweight and obesity
  • Oral health risk assessment and fluoride application
  • Smoking cessation
  • Travel health

In South Australia, authorised pharmacists are not permitted to provide Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice services for chronic disease management programs. Further consideration will be given to enabling these services in the future.

Service Costs

Under the Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice initiative, pharmacists may charge a consultation fee along with the cost of any medicines or consumables. Costs of medicines are not claimable under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Costs paid by the consumer may include:

  • consultation fees
  • medicines
  • consumables
  • investigation or diagnostic services.

Pharmacists are responsible for clearly communicating all applicable costs to the consumer and obtaining financial consent prior to providing a service.

Employer Obligations - Scope of Practice Training for Pharmacists

The Guild Workplace Relations team have developed FAQs  to help employers and employees navigate scope of practice training arrangements. They are not intended to be taken in lieu of legal advice.

Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice Initiative Handbook

The Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice Initiative Handbook is currently being developed by SA Health and will be published shortly. It will provide authorised pharmacists and pharmacy owners with practical guidance, resources, and operational information to support the safe and effective implementation of Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice in South Australia.

Clinical Practice Guidelines

The Clinical Practice Guidelines were developed by SA Health with input from GPs, specialists, pharmacists, and consumers. They reflect national guidelines and incorporate international best practice and professional standards to support high-quality, comprehensive, and evidence-based care for consumers across the range of covered conditions. The Community Pharmacist Prescribing Code requires authorised pharmacists to follow the Clinical Practice Guidelines when providing Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice services, including the prescribing of certain Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) Medicines.

The Clinical Practice Guidelines are only to be used by authorised pharmacists who are providing Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice services, including the prescribing of certain Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) Medicines, in accordance with the Community Pharmacist Prescribing Code.
