How Gino’s legacy shaped a lifelong career in pharmacy
“Growing up in Mitchelton, I was surrounded by pharmacy from the very beginning. My father, Gino Aurelio Garozzo (Rill), opened his first pharmacy in 1956- the same year I was born. Watching him serve his community inspired me, and from an early age I aspired to follow in his footsteps. By 1977, I had achieved that dream, graduating from Queensland University as a pharmacist.”
Building a business in community pharmacy
“In the 1980s, I became a partner in my father’s pharmacy- a partnership I still hold today, now alongside two other partners, operating as Garozzo’s TerryWhite Chemmart.
In 1980, I managed the opening of a new pharmacy at Arana Hills and became a partner there in 1986. I remain a co-owner of that pharmacy, now TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills, with two colleagues.
Over the years, I have also opened and acquired three additional pharmacies, managing partnerships with around eight colleagues at any one time. While I have since sold two of those stores, I remain actively involved in the others.”
Joining The Pharmacy Guild of Australia
“My father was a proud member and strong supporter of the Pharmacy Guild from its inception. He instilled in me the same belief in the importance of the Guild’s work, and I carry that conviction just as strongly today.
The Guild has done a remarkable job of strengthening the profession’s standing and ensuring it continues to serve the public effectively.”
Words of advice for future community pharmacy owners
“My advice to young pharmacists is to respect the vital role they play in their community. Always focus on improving health outcomes for patients and maintaining the trust of those you serve.
I also believe young pharmacists should never lose sight of the goal of ownership. Explore that path thoughtfully, and begin by engaging with the Pharmacy Guild, which provides invaluable guidance and support along the way.”
