Sam Turner: Innovation through collaboration
Sam Turner's journey reflects a passion for innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement. At Scrypt Ventures (now "Scrypt"), Sam worked with community pharmacies to leverage data and technology to optimise operations. He later co-founded Vytal Health, a pharmacy group built on innovation, meaningful relationships and sustainable growth. Driven by a belief that collaboration and innovation are essential to the profession's future, Sam continues to champion new ways of supporting pharmacy teams, strengthening businesses and improving patient care.
I began my pharmacy career in 2007 when I was just 14 years old, working at TerryWhite Chemists, Myer Centre. Whilst having no intention of studying pharmacy directly after school, I worked with many influential pharmacists during my time at the award-winning store before finally choosing to switch careers and graduate pharmacy from QUT in 2015.What’s one moment from your years in pharmacy that you’ll never forget?
I’ll never forget the time I spent at university, travelling around Australia to visit friends I’d met through NAPSA at various NAPSA congresses. These are friends who I’ve now worked with in so many capacities within my career. I’m so grateful to have been given that experience before I graduated and entered the (professional) workforce.
How has community pharmacy changed over the years?
The clinical aspect has changed significantly, however the core value that community pharmacy brings has always been the same. Accessibility, trust, and relationships, have always been the cornerstone of community pharmacy, and this is driven by local pharmacists and operators. We should never forget or lose this focus.
What’s been the biggest benefit of being part of The Guild community throughout your ownership years?
It is evident that The Guild community represents a united goal in sharing knowledge and experience amongst members as well as representing us when it matters from a regulatory and political standpoint.
What advice would you give to a young pharmacist or new owner starting out today?
My advice would be not to get so bogged down in the business that you don’t look up or participate in the important collaboration and event opportunities that allow you to network and learn from your peers. Be open to constant change and innovation when it’s offered to you.
