Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice

Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice has been legally enabled in South Australia.

Under the Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice initiative, authorised community pharmacists who have completed an SA Health-approved postgraduate qualification can assess, manage, and treat a broader range of common conditions and provide health and wellbeing services for eligible people

Legislation

For a pharmacist to provide these services, they must meet the requirements outlined in Regulation 17A of the Controlled Substances (Poisons) Regulations 2011 and Community Pharmacist Prescribing Code (PDF 709KB).

Specifically, Regulation 17A of the Poisons Regulations enables authorised pharmacists to provide additional services within community pharmacies in South Australia. Specifically, this permits a pharmacist to prescribe certain Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) Medicines if:

The Community Pharmacist Prescribing Code (PDF 709KB) (CPP Code) (version 1.0, January 2026) sets out the requirements that pharmacists must comply with to provide Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice services in South Australia. The CPP Code specifically addresses:

  • Pharmacist requirements
  • Prescribing requirements
  • Training requirements
  • Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) Medicines that may be prescribed by a pharmacist for the specific indications, including any restrictions or conditions, in accordance with approved Clinical Practice Guidelines and Protocols.
