Pharmacist Vaccinations

Outreach Vaccination Services

Since the updates to the Extended Practice Authority – Pharmacists, in late 2023, community pharmacists are authorised to administer vaccinations in a range of locations outside of the pharmacy. Locations that do not require any additional approvals as listed in the EPA are:

  • aged care facilities;
  • general practices;
  • private health facilities;
  • public hospitals; and
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services.

All other locations that you may wish to offer vaccination services require a general approval to be granted by Queensland Health.

More information about general approvals can be found on the Queensland Health website: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/system-governance/licences/medicines-poisons/medicines/general-approvals

The pharmacist-specific form is available via this link: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0024/1313178/app-ga-immunisation-pharmacist-initial.pdf

Before deciding to offer outreach vaccination services, there are several considerations relating to:

  • workforce capacity;
  • infrastructure (including IT and data recording);
  • cold chain management; and
  • consent processes, etc.

The following resources have been developed to aid in addressing the requirements of offering an outreach vaccination service:
