Optional Immunisation Refresher Workshop An optional course for authorised pharmacist immunisers intended to increase confidence

This optional course is designed for pharmacists who are already authorised immunisers and is intended to increase pharmacist confidence to deliver immunisation services.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss references which should be utilised in a pharmacist vaccination service
  • Demonstrate the vaccination pre-screening and consent process
  • Demonstrate hand hygiene procedure
  • Describe the benefits, precautions, and target groups for influenza, dTpa and MMR vaccination
  • Demonstrate the ability to set up a vaccination area with required injecting equipment
  • Demonstrate the ability to draw up from a syringe and administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections
  • Discuss appropriate post-vaccination care in a pharmacy setting
  • Describe the symptoms and management of vasovagal episodes and anaphylaxis

Course Pre-requisites

Participants must hold a current Pharmacist Immuniser certificate.

Please note: The online dTpa, MMR and Meningococcal theory course is not a pre-requisite to completion of this workshop. However, it must be completed prior to vaccinating for dTpa, MMR and Meningococcal ACWY.

This is a four hour practical workshop.

The Immunisation Refresher Online Training for Pharmacists is designed for trained immunisers to refresh their knowledge and skills in delivery of immunisation services.

Learning Objectives:
  • Recognise requirements of pharmacist immunisers, including resources
  • Recognise key information about relevant vaccine preventable diseases
  • Discuss the practical processes involved in performing an immunisation
  • Identify the correct injection site for vaccination in an adult and highlight the reasons why correct injection site identification is important
  • Highlight the importance of reporting on the AIR

Online dTpa, MMR & Meningococcal ACWY Training Online theory training for pharmacist immunisers whom completed immunisation training prior to 2019

The scope of pharmacist administered vaccinations in Western Australia was expanded in August 2019 to include dTpa, MMR and Meningococcal ACWY to people aged 16 years and over.

Pharmacists who have completed their initial immunisation training prior to 2019 can upskill and expand their vaccination scope by completing three mandatory online modules.

Course Pre-requisites

Participants must hold a pharmacist immunisation certificate prior to enrolment.

Course Duration and Cost

This theory-based course is estimated to take 2.5 hours to complete and is delivered online via the GuildED learning platform.

This training is provided at no cost to Guild members and staff ($150 for non-members).

Human Papillomavirus Online Module Pharmacists wishing to administer the HPV vaccine must complete this online module prior to administration of the vaccine.

The scope of pharmacist administered vaccines in Western Australia was expanded in April 2022 to include Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV).

  • Describe the morbidity and mortality associated with HPV
  • Recognise the clinical features and complications of infection with HPV
  • Identify individuals who should be vaccinated for HPV through the National Immunisation Program
  • Identify vaccination recommendations for people at risk of complications from HPV
  • Recognise the basic requirements for vaccine storage and administration of HPV vaccines
  • Recognise precautions and contraindications for HPV vaccination

Annual Influenza Online Module

The Influenza Module has been developed by the Communicable Disease Control Directorate (CDCD) and the WA Department of Health to support immunisation providers undertake an annual refresher in this topic and provides up-to-date information on influenza immunisation.

The Influenza Module is typically updated in April of each year.

Learning objectives:

  • Explain what an influenza virus is, the epidemiology of the disease and the expected clinical features
  • List the various ways of preventing influenza disease
  • List the strains of the current influenza vaccine, the brands available on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and the eligibility criteria for NIP influenza vaccines in WA
  • Outline the current best practice for pre-vaccination screening, gaining consent and documentation to ensure the individual is vaccinated safely
  • Describe the process for reporting adverse events following vaccination in Western Australia

Course duration and cost:

  • This online course will take approximately 2 hours to complete
  • This course is free

  • Select to complete the Influenza Module
  • Training requests are responded to within 3 business days via an email from Rise inviting users to Accept an Invite to complete the training. Once Accept an Invite is selected, users will have 2 weeks to complete the training
  • Users will need to create an account with Rise at first log-in. The required fields include a password, first name, last name and ticking the Consent to use of personal information box
  • Upon successful log-in, select Browse Library and select Influenza under the Topics heading
  • Upon completion of the module, it is important to print or save a copy of the Certificate as the account is deleted after 2 weeks
  • The entire process must be repeated to re-register if the module is not completed within 2 weeks of accepting an invite

COVID-19 Vaccination Training

Pharmacists wishing to administer COVID-19 Vaccines must complete the Australian Government COVID-19 Vaccination Training.

The training is comprised of 6 Core Modules plus additional modules for each COVID-19 Vaccine. The training must be completed PRIOR to administration of these vaccines.

Pharmacists are eligible to self-record Group 2 CPD points upon successful completion of the training. 1 hour of the activity earns 2 Group 2 CPD credits.

  • Correct positioning for a child when vaccinating

  • Vaccination requirements for special patient groups
  • Strategies to communicate with parents about vaccination
  • Concept of immunisation catch-up
